Late Night Visits - ONLY in Cairo!

My door bell rang at 11:40pm. thats 23:40 hours.

The laundry boy had already brought my ironed clothes at 10:45pm - he normally turns up anytime between 10:00pm and 11:30pm - so I was wondering who it was. Being Egypt, I knew it wasn't an emergency (they would have rung the bell 5-10 times in quick succession if it was) so I thought it was probably someone who needed me to turn the key in the elevator or something like that.

Turns out it was my electricity guy with the bill for the last month. At 11:45pm!

Only in Egypt!
1. Will the electricity man hand deliver your monthly bill at your door step.
2. Will the electricity man also collect the payment for the bill.
3. Will the electricity man land in your house at odd hours of the night.
4. Will your electricity bill range from 40Le to 300LE for almost similar levels of usage of electricity.

Gotta love this place!

At least it was something relatively sensible and useful. I've had people call me to chat at that hour...especially in summer when all of Cairo seems to become nocturnal. That's something I find hard to do on a farm. LOL

hahaha,

unless it is useful or sensible, I don't open the door late at night or answer the phone. I'm known to keep my phone on silent thru the days that I want peace and quiet.

people learn quickly that email is the best way to contact me :)

Great blog!

I don't want to be the annoying person who writes long advisory comments... Forgive me this once (and I promise not to do it again): I had the same thing happen to me re the varying amounts on the electricity bill. Then one day out of the blue I got a bill for 3,000 LE. It turned out that the meter reader wasn't reading it properly and the one month I took the reading (properly) there was a BIG gap between his last guess and my real numbers.

Well, we had our water delivered here at 10 -10:30PM, the weekend before last (a Saturday night). Now I understand it will be delivered sometime between 10PM and 1AM in the morning - some new rule against trucks entering the city during the daytime.
